CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Vivian

I’m currently waiting in bed until Xavier returns. My pulse is still racing, and I’ve barely thought of anything other than him kneeling before me. There’s something about a man on his knees….

The problem is that I feel slightly guilty about his affection. I’m not planning to use the dagger anymore, but knowing it’s laying in the back of my closet is eating away at me.

It doesn’t take long before the door opens, pushing a cart stocked with plates of food into the room.

“I didn’t ask what you were craving, so I got a bit of everything.”

Meat, fish, vegetables, soups, pies, and so much more. There’s even two plates full of deserts. This man might be rough around the edges, but he knows how to treat his woman.

“Just no mushroom,” he says with raised brows.

“They can really cause me to hallucinate?”

Xavier nods once. “They are from Fall Court. Very tasty, but very strong. Valery has a human friend who thought she was a chicken once after she ate them.”

I laugh, then straighten my back against the headboard, trying to decide what I want.

“Maybe some meat and vegetables first?”

Xavier grabs a plate, loads it with what I asked for, and much more. Then he places it on my lap and gives me a kiss on my forehead. After grabbing a plate for himself, he takes his place beside me on the bed.

“What is in this food of yours?” I ask, moaning when the first bite of vegetables explodes with flavor. “Because this does not taste the same as where I’m from.”

“Every fruit and vegetable is grown in the court it belongs to. We grow apples, pears, and sweet potatoes, for example, while Summer Court grows different berries.”

“I’ll never get enough,” I say, taking another bite. “It’s blowing my mind.”

Xavier starts to eat, keeping an eye on me with a subtle tug on his lips. He’s enjoying watching me eat. No judgment or side-eye. It’s refreshing.

Now it’s time for the hard part of tonight. “I want to go visit Florence after we get back to the Winter Court. Is that alright?”

“You don’t have to ask,” he says, scooping up peas and chicken. “If you want, I could come with you.”

“I’d like that, but... maybe next time? I don’t think you’d enjoy watching me and Florence talk for a full day.”

My heart aches for him to come with me. I never imagined feeling so bonded to someone. I know it’s just not smart to bring him.

“I enjoy everything that has to do with you, Vivian. But I get that you want to spend time with your friend.”

“Thank you. I’ll bring you back some cheese. It’s really good.”

Xavier grins, then takes another bite of his food.

“Why don’t we go back to the Winter Court? You could just portal us there.”

It’s a nice bed and a pretty room, but I’m missing the cold, if I’m honest.

“There’s a court meeting tomorrow morning. It’s easier this way.”

“About what?”

“The kings want to talk about the vampires. I spoke to Florian and Kash about it, but apparently Malik wants to hear about it too.
